We write microfiction

So, what are you going to do when you have a sudden story idea as you’re walking to catch the bus and head off to “real” work? Well, you hold onto it until you get to the bus stop, whip out your phone and jot it down in a notes app to keep for later.

Except you find, in the course of ten minutes or so, that this idea stands alone. It is not part of a bigger story. It isn’t something which you can keep to insert into some other piece of work. It is what it is, plain and simple. And there, out of the blue, you have written a piece of “micro-fiction”.

Nothing special – a story by Pam Allison

Today was not a special day. Not any kind of anniversary or celebration, no-one’s birthday. A day totally unconnected to your life or your death. Not even one of those days which are memorable in themselves, the first coffee, the last day at the library, no, today was not any of these. Yet I saw you this morning on the corner, as clear as that day when we parted with a cheery “See you tomorrow,” and walked away, me into the future and you into the embrace of a lunatic with a knife.
